Plumber, Drainer and Gasfitter Licences Explained
Queensland runs two licence layers for plumbing and drainage work. The person on the tools holds an occupational licence, which shows their skills. The business carrying the job holds a contractor licence, which shows financial capacity and the training to run jobs properly.
The QBCC issues both. Three classes then cover most of what we do:
Plumber
the water supply and fixture side of the trade, apart from work needing a separate endorsement.
Drainer
below-ground drainage, meaning sewer lines and stormwater lines.
Gasfitter
gas work needs a gas work licence of its own. A licensed gasfitter is the only person Queensland allows to install, alter, repair, service, test or certify gas systems and pipework, and you can ask to see that licence before gas work starts.

Who Checks Plumbing Work and What You Receive
The QBCC issues licences and records notifiable work, while Brisbane City Council assesses applications, grants permits and inspects. Council will also inspect notifiable work at any point if an owner asks.
Depending on the job, the paperwork you receive includes:
A Form 4 copy
after notifiable work, given to the owner or whoever hired the plumber. If yours never turns up, the QBCC can provide one.
A gas compliance certificate
after gas work on a new installation or alteration, handed to the owner as soon as the gasfitter finishes.

Questions People Ask Our Plumbers
Call (07) 3524 7163How do I check a plumber's licence in Queensland?
Search the QBCC's online registers. A licence search confirms the holder is current, and an address search shows whether a Form 4 was lodged for that property. You can check ours any time: QBCC No: 15024607.
What is the difference between a plumber and a drainer?
A plumber handles the water side: supply pipes, fixtures and fittings. A drainer handles the below-ground side, meaning sewer lines and stormwater lines. Gas work sits apart from both and needs a separate gas work licence.
Does plumbing work in New Farm come with a warranty?
Yes, our labour carries a lifetime labour warranty, and our Fix-It-or-It's-Free guarantee covers the work (T&Cs apply). If we're late, $100 comes off your bill.
What can I do if plumbing work in New Farm turns out faulty?
Raise the problem with the plumber first and give them the chance to return. If the job may be unlicensed, defective or non-compliant, you can complain to the QBCC through the online form. Missing Form 4 paperwork for notifiable work can go the same way.
